Walter "Sandy"
Day
d. Jun 6, 2026
Walter Sanderson (Sandy) Day August 30, 1933 – June 6, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sandy Day, who peacefully passed away on June 6, 2026, at the age of 92, surrounded by the love of his family. He was able to spend his final moments in the comfort of his home in Oakland, Maine.
Sandy was born on August 30, 1933, in Waterville, Maine to Walter J.P. Day and Gertrude Day. Sandy grew up in Waterville and attended Kent’s Hill, Coburn Classical Institute, and the University of Maine.
Throughout his life, Sandy was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, dedication to his community, and passion for travel and golf. He proudly served as President of Days Travel Bureau for more than 60 years, building a respected business and creating lasting relationships with clients, colleagues, and friends.
Sandy was deeply involved in the Waterville community and held leadership roles in numerous organizations. He served as President of the Waterville Country Club and was an active member of Inland Hospital, the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club, the Rotary Club, and the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). He was also a proud veteran who carried a strong sense of service throughout his life.
Travel was both Sandy's profession and his passion. He loved exploring new places around the world, but his heart always belonged to Maine, especially the beautiful Sugarloaf mountains and the lakes in the Belgrade region. Whether traveling abroad, skiing the slopes of Sugarloaf, or spending time with family and friends at the lake, Sandy embraced life with enthusiasm, kindness, and a genuine appreciation for the people and places he loved.
Outside of work, while Sandy’s travels took him around the world, some of his happiest moments were spent at Snow Pond, surrounded by his family and friends. Whether enjoying a cocktail by the lake, sharing stories on his deck, or watching his grandchildren grow up, Sandy appreciated life’s simple pleasures. His kindness, wisdom, and humor left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Sandy is survived by his loving children Jeffrey Day and Susan Doyon; nephews Peter and Ian, his cherished grandchildren, Matt, Christopher, Macy, Jodie, Sydney, and Mackenzie, along with their spouses, who brought him immense pride and joy throughout his life; and Michelle, who was like a second daughter to him and held a special place in his heart. Sandy was predeceased by his parents Walter J.P. Day and Gertrude Day, and his beloved son, Timothy Day.
Sandy lived life to the fullest and found joy in the people and passions that surrounded him. An avid golfer, lifelong traveler, dedicated skier, and proud Mainer, he treasured any opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Whether on the fairway, sitting by the lake, on a ski slope, or exploring a new destination, Sandy’s laughter, stories, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His legacy of humor, friendship, and adventure will live on for generations to come.
Forever loved, forever remembered.
