Ralph Palmer, 91, of Augusta, Maine, died peacefully at home on October 19, 2025. Born on July 20, 1934, in Bath, Maine, Ralph was a proud Mainer and lived a full life as a father, husband, and friend.
Ralph graduated from Williams High School in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve and served during the Korean Conflict. Ralph also earned a diploma in machine drafting from the Chicago Technical College. He used his engineering skills to help design and build many of Maine's roadways, working with the State Department of Transportation for over 25 years.
Ralph was an artist and a sportsman. He had an ear for music and learned to play the mandolin and some piano. Later in life, he built his own ukulele. He loved to sketch and draw, using different techniques, and became an accomplished woodcarver as a member of the Coastal Carvers of Maine and the Harpswell Carvers.
Ralph had a deep interest in American history and a fondness for westerns and maritime adventure stories. For several years, until 2020, he volunteered as a tour guide at the Maine Maritime Museum.
Ralph was also a member of the Masons, the American Legion, and a lifetime member of the Elks. He especially enjoyed his annual deer hunting trips to Bingham with his close friends.
In his younger days, he took his family camping, most often to Hermit's Island, and coached his sons' Little League teams as well as taking part in Boy Scout trips. In his retirement, he enjoyed time with his wife and kids: snow-shoeing, ice-fishing, golfing, traveling, and playing hilariously competitive games at family gatherings.
Ralph is survived by his wife, Bea; his son John; daughters Carolyn and Catherine; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss his quick wit and wisdom. Sadly, his eldest son, Jay, died in 1989.
At the family's request, there will be no service.
Services are under the care of Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church Street, Oakland. An online guestbook may be signed and memories shared at www.wheelerfh.com.
