Obituary

OAKLAND – Nancy P. Barclay, 76, passed away peacefully at her home in Oakland on September 14, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of close friends. Born on May 25, 1949, in Darby, Pennsylvania, to Alfred and Elizabeth (Kelly) Peale, Nancy moved to Maine as a young adult, quickly falling in love with the state's charm and natural beauty, where she has made her home ever since. Nancy was a devoted wife to her late husband and best friend, Paul Barclay, whose memory she carried with her every day since his passing in 2008. She was also predeceased by her beloved parents and siblings, including her sister, Maryjean Messer (Peale), and her brother, David Peale. Nancy is survived by her cherished nephew, Gregory Messer (Jayne Messer), her dear niece, Kelly Libor (Rob Libor), and her adored great-nieces and great-nephew, Sammi, Ryann, and Van Libor, all of whom will miss her deeply. Her legacy is also carried forward by her dear friends Shirley Brook, Pam Christensen, Brynn Charest, Margie Davis, Susan Perrino, Dale Tilton, and Tim Bard, who were a constant source of support and love in her life. A retired educator, Nancy spent 35 years teaching in the Messalonskee/China school district, where she touched the lives of countless students and colleagues. She remained close to many of them up until her final days, a testament to the lasting bonds she created. Nancy's love for animals was boundless, and over the years, her golden retrievers became her beloved companions. Her most recent loss, that of her golden retriever Kinsey, was a deep sorrow for her, but she found comfort in the memories of the joy these loyal pets brought to her life. Strong-willed, compassionate, and spirited, Nancy lived life with an unwavering heart and a determination to embrace each day. She faced her health challenges in recent years with grace and courage, and now, she can rest in peace. At Nancy's request, there will be no formal services. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
