Belgrade: Maurice Willis Childs, 74, of Belgrade, passed Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at the Woodland Memory Care Unit in Waterville, ME. Maurice was born on November 14, 1951, the son of Willis G Childs and Esther J (Weymouth) Childs. He attended school in Belgrade and graduated in 1970 from Williams High School in Oakland.

Maurice built a successful career doing earthwork, construction, selling firewood and running the Belgrade Transfer Station. His most notable achievement was serving as Road Commissioner for the town of Belgrade for 30 years. It was a position he prided himself on, and he brought an expertise and attention to detail that was appreciated and admired.

Maurice also had a passion for racing and in his earlier years raced in Bangor, Oxford and Winterport ME, as well as Epping, NH. He was an avid fan of NASCAR and the NHRA his entire life. He also enjoyed traveling in his motorhome, camping, hunting and fishing.

Maurice was predeceased by his parents Willis and Esther Childs; uncles Maurice Weymouth and Ray Weymouth and his wife Inge; and his first wife Cindy (Galouch) Childs.

He is survived by his wife, Karen (Craib) Childs; Uncle Carl Weymouth and his wife Janet; cousins Gordon Childs and Carroll Weymouth; stepchildren, Erik Charles and his wife Joanna, Arthur Charles and his wife Bailey, and Suzanna Leighton; step grandchildren Sophie, Samuel, Winston, Ward and Edwin; and friends Ed Ketch, Ralph and Harry Stiman, Skip Johnson, Bill Martin, Jason Labbe, Mike Burnham, Bill Gee, Mike Heino, Mike Jancovic, and so many more beloved people that were part of his life.

The family would like to thank Maine General Hospital in Augusta, Woodland Memory Care Unit in Waterville and Beacon Hospice for their attentive and loving care.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 10:30 am at Pine Grove Cemetery, Belgrade, ME.
