HARMONY- With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Mary Littlefield, a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and friend, who passed away peacefully on May 7th, surrounded by her family in the comfort of love and connection. Born on November 4, 1955, in Waterville, Maine, Mary was one of 8 children to Clayton and Mary LaVerdiere.
Mary carried with her throughout her life a deep appreciation for family, community, and the beauty of the world around her. She devoted her career to special education, offering patience, advocacy, and unwavering care to students and families. In later years, she found a true home at the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences, where her compassion, humor, and belief in every student's potential left a lasting impact.
She was a gifted fiber artist whose hands were rarely still. Whether sewing, knitting, or spinning, she created beauty and warmth that will continue to live on in the pieces she lovingly made for those around her. In her later life, she found the most joy in nature's quiet details and felt most at peace among gardens, kayaking, doing handicrafts, and taking part in the seasonal traditions of rural life.
Above all else, she cherished her role as "Mamie." Her seven grandchildren—Grayson, Caden, Carter, Keegan, Lucas, Vera, and new baby Phoebe—were the center of her heart and the source of her greatest joy. She delighted in their stories, milestones, laughter, and companionship, and each of them carries forward the love she gave so freely.
She is survived by her daughter, Caitlin Pantemoller, and son-in-law Matt; her sons, Gordon Littlefield and Jacob Littlefield; and Jacob's partner, Emily Olsen; her treasured grandchildren and grand-puppy, Dax; her sisters, Susan Banister and her husband Don, Ann West and her husband Richard, Kathy Worcester and her husband Ed, and her sister-in-law, Gina LaVerdiere; her brothers, Charlie LaVerdiere and his wife Brenda, and Mark LaVerdiere.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Clayton LaVerdiere; her brother, Tom LaVerdiere; her sister, Michele; her brother-in-law, Barry Rosen; and her beloved dog, Ruger.
A celebration of Mary's life will be held Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 2:00pm-4:00 pm at Goodwill Hinckley Prescott Auditorium. In honor of her memory, the family encourages acts of kindness, time spent in nature, and the making of something by hand for someone.
