Augusta – Bertha M. Wiggins 84, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was surrounded with love and support from family.
Born on September 7, 1941, in Jacksonville, N.C., the daughter of Clayton and Mary (Collins) Kellum of N.C. Bertha, lovingly known as Mema, she was a woman that was satisfied with what she had. She enjoyed living a quiet life, and she would deal with things as they happened without complaint.
On June 8, 1957, she married the love of her life, William (Bill) Wiggins. They had 4 children and built a beautiful life together. The family moved to Winslow, Maine in 1966, where they chose to reside. They enjoyed many years camping, fishing, snowmobiling and visiting their family in North Carolina. It was not uncommon for them to take a scenic drive in the fall and loved going to the fair to walk around. They were married 37 years before her husband passed away in 1994.
Bertha dedicated many years to housekeeping for the Nuns of Mount Merici Academy, and enjoyed her time spent there. Outside of housekeeping, she was a stay-at-home mom and took pride in caring for and being with her children. She always made sure there was something to snack on after school, and often that was a freshly baked cake! She was a huge Elvis Presley fan. Some joked he was her second husband. Her home was the place where all the holidays and weekend family dinners were held. In her younger years, she would go to ceramics and make vases or other decorative items to sit around her home. She had the honor to watch not only her grandchildren, but most of her great grandchildren grow up, which brought her so much joy.
She was predeceased by her parents Clayton and Mary Kellum, her husband William (Bill) Wiggins, son, Keith Wiggins, grandson, Christopher Wiggins, siblings Anette Bright, Lonelle Jones, Vesta Bright, and sibling-in-law, Judy Marshrburn, and Vera Grace.
She is survived by her daughter Pamela Himes and husband Leo; son, Rocky Wiggins, and wife Marjorie; son, Jamie Wiggins and wife Laurie; her grandchildren Todd Carter and spouse Binica, Kristen Kimball and husband Brian, Amber LaFrance and husband Jeff, and Amy Wiggins; great grandchildren, Mason, Allie, Colton, Piper, Davanee, Rory, and Lucas.
There will be a service on March 5, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Veilleux Funeral Home in Waterville, ME.
The family would like to thank Andwell Hospice for all the help and support as well as the Staff that cared for and made a difference over the years!
